Zeke sighed as he crossed the large empty ballroom. It had only been a few days since he had arrived in France and already he wanted to go home. He didn’t quite like France all that much, what with all the pigeons, stray dogs, and French people. He wouldn’t say he was racist, there were some things he liked about France, but in the end there was always something that rubbed him the wrong way. Perhaps it was something he got from his anti-social father, an old man who spent most of his life sailing. Regardless of the reason, Zeke just didn’t like France. Not that he had a choice as to his being there. His parents decided that they wanted to take a year long vacation around Australia, one of Zeke’s preferred counties, but had opted to send Zeke to stay with his grandparents (on his mother’s side) to complete his education.
“Po kraĭnyeĭ mere ya ne sobirayusʹ frantsuzskoĭ shkoly,” he muttered to himself as he pulled out a map of his grandparents’ old estate. No matter how many times he came here he always got lost. To make it worse, he was already running late for his meeting with the principal of the high school he had been enrolled in. Although that was more his parents fault than his, having argued for the past week with his grandparents about what school to send him too. His mother wanted him home-schooled, just like he had been until now, while his father wanted to send him to a snooty all boys public school filled with French kids. Hell, he couldn’t even speak French, let alone want to. Thankfully his grandparents, always looking out for him, had decided that the best thing for him would be to attend an English speaking school that had mostly foreign students. The only downside to this however was the fact that it specialised in teenagers who had particularly outstanding talents in a certain field. At first Zeke had no idea how he would get into a school with such a strict acceptance policy. He hadn’t quite noticed his exceptional swimming abilities, but it hadn’t escaped his family’s attention.
“Zeke, hurry up dear. I just called the principal; we’ve got an extra half hour.”
“Da, Grandma,” the young boy replied as he hurried into the kitchen to grab one last nectarine. That was his grandmother, always looking after him.
