History:
Jamie grew up in New York City. Her mother was a drug addict, and although Jamie had three older siblings, they had all been taken away by social services before Jamie was born.
Growing up, Jamie’s mother was often absent. She would leave for long stretches of time and Jamie would have no idea where she was. When she was around, she alternated between bringing random men into the house and having violent mood swings.
Because she was left alone so much of the time, Jamie took to entertaining herself. She did this through reading, and as she got a bit older she began writing as well. She also threw herself into her studies at school in an effort to make up for the way that she was raised: she didn’t want to turn out like her mother. She wanted to prove that she was better than her mother.
When Jamie was eleven years old, she was permanently abandoned by her mother. She was eventually taken into state custody and put in a foster home. It was later discovered that her mother had OD’d and died. Jamie took the death in silence. Although she was brought to see a psychologist on a few occasions, she refused to talk about her mother’s death.
In eighth grade, one of the teachers at Jamie’s school approached her. She told Jamie that she thought she had a lot of talent, and that there was a boarding school in France that she should apply to. Jamie applied, and received a scholarship to Desrosier’s School.

Jamie frowned pensively as she packed her suitcase. Her hand hesitated over a cream-colored cardigan. She bit her lower lip, and then tossed the cardigan onto her bunk-mates bed. It wasn’t the most flattering cardigan on Jamie, and it would look gorgeous against Rose’s dark skin. Jamie closed her eyes, turning away from the sight of Rose’s empty bed. Rose had been given the opportunity to spend the summer at soccer camp. Jamie hadn’t received her scholarship to Desrosier’s before Rose left, and so she hadn’t said goodbye. Now, she wished that she had. She hated the fact that she wouldn’t be able to say goodbye to the girl she had lived with for the past three years.
It was hard to believe that by this time tomorrow, she would be in France. France! She had never even been on a plane before! Jamie didn’t know if she was more excited or terrified of the prospect. She could barely believe that she had been accepted into a prestigious international school.
Jamie licked her lower lip, smoothing a hand across the front of a spiral-bound notebook before tucking it into her suitcase on top of her clothes. She pulled the top of the suitcase down and latched it. The sound rang of finality. She ran a hand through her long brown hair and turned to give her room the once-over.
“Ready as I’ll ever be,” Jamie whispered, wrapping one hand around her midsection.
