Writing an angry letter home demanding that he be returned to his status quo was the first task on Emilius's list of things to to that day. Since his arrival, about an hour prior, he had been sitting on a desk in the library surrounded by his three navy blue suitcases and deep in thought. He’d had plenty of time on the plane to think of how to articulate his discontent, but had fallen asleep sometime over the English Channel. Having failed to start on the plane he tried to work in the taxi from the airport, but failed due to constant jiggling of the car, as it twisted round bends and down hills, making him rather car sick. This caused him to arrive queasy, determined and as disgruntled as ever. Now he sat, cross-legged, on the smooth mahogany surface of the table closest a window with his pen in his mouth, chewing it fiercely. His eyes had continuous contact with the piece of paper in his hand, unblinking, he scrutinised it as if it were to blame for his ‘writer’s block’. Suddenly one of his canines pierced through the tacky plastic pen, he had found at a post office once. Ink sprayed onto his face like a punctured artery for a second. Emilius however failed to notice, despite his usual adept ability to tell when his face had suddenly become wet for no apparent reason. And so he remained transfixed, glaring at a blank piece of paper, dowsed in ink and rather hungry.

Adelaide Peyroux strolled into the library, like she did every morning, and cast a sideways glance at the Librarian. She took her time, only stepping on the big black square tiles, making sure not to step on any of the white ones, and made her way over to the Classics section where she stood and pondered for a brief moment, before reaching forward and pulling The Catcher in the Rye from the shelf.
Adelaide had been at the school for almost a month now and when she stepped into the library for the first time, had vowed to get through every book in the Classics section by the end of the year, even the ones written in French. If the idea of having a multitude of amazing books wasn’t enough, the Librarian wasn’t bad incentive either. Adelaide could (and did) go on and on to her roommates about how stunning the young man was.
“He’s tall, with shaggy black hair, and his smile...!” She’d say, and then feel a little ashamed at how quickly she’d gotten a crush on someone, but after all, she was a teenage girl; it was in her nature to act this way.
So Adelaide stood at the Classics section, clutching Catcher to her chest, and stole glances of the Librarian at regular intervals while looking for another book to get. Finally deciding that if she went around to the other side of the shelf, she could look at him from between the books and therefore had a smaller chance of being noticed, so Adelaide swung herself around to the other side and bent over to look through the gap between Great Expectations and Oliver Twist, suddenly realising her skirt had flipped up as she bent down.
Adelaide let out a little squeal and stood, quickly, pulling her skirt back down into place and praying like crazy that there was no one behind her, so when she turned around and saw a blonde boy a few tables away chewing on a pen, she almost died. But it seemed like he hadn’t seen what just happened. He was obviously too preoccupied with what he was doing to notice her, or notice that his pen had exploded in his mouth.
“Interesting.” Adelaide thought, and crept over to the young man. “I wonder if he can even tell that I’m standing next to him.” And with that thought, she leaned over and read over the blonde boy’s shoulder.
When the boy moved slightly, Adelaide almost jumped out of her skin and stood back. “What happened to you, cher’? You fight an octopus?” She asked, in her unusually strong Cajun accent.

Emilius almost jumped when his concentration was shattered by someone speaking. He turned round and blinked, staring with a rather gormless expression at the girl whilst he tried to salvage his derailed train of thought. "Octo...what?" he mumbled, he couldn't think what she could be referring too. Emilius continued to have a confused look until it finally registered that his face felt wet. " Oh bugger..." floated across his mind as he examined the dark blue liquid that had now stained the palm of his hand. He sighed whilst composing himself, "I see you've noticed my tan, blue is the new orange, didn't you know?" Emilius said with a grin, "Raine, Emilius Raine, um...that’s my...name". An awkward feeling crept over him, making his thoughts focus desperately on how to rescue the situation as it grew increasingly more embarrassing by the second.

"I see you've noticed my tan, blue is the new orange, didn't you know?" The blonde boy joked, before introducing himself as Emilius Raine.
"Emilius Raine, huh? Great name. Perfect for a writer." Adelaide guessed. She glanced from his ink-stained face, to his blue eyes and stuck out her pale hand, with it's chewed, green-painted fingernails. "Adelaide Peyroux, Harpist Extraordinaire. I'm here to outshine the rest of the school and leave you academic types in the dust."
It was a joke, but she was still embarrassed from her skirt, so it came out a little rude sounding. Emilius looked a little awkward too, but she couldn't tell at this point whether he was always like that or not. For lack of better word, it was... cute.
The redheaded harpist pulled a couple of scrunched tissues from her green-and-black striped hoodie pocket and handed them to Emilius. "Don't worry, they're clean. Hayfever. I like to be prepared." She said, glancing back over her shoulder to see if she could spot the Librarian. She couldn't, but she didn't worry; this conversation seemed a little more interesting than any of the short exchanges she'd had with the Librarian. The blonde kid seemed so... unique.

Emilius smiled when she complimented his name and went to shake her hand before realising it was the inky one; he withdrew it and replaced it with his clean hand, "Thank you" he said cheerfully, "It's nice to meet you". The feeling of unease was starting to fade a little now that the conversation was picking up a little. He noticed the tissues Adelaide was offering and took one, and immediately started dabbing at the ink on his face, "Thanks for sparing me the embarrassment of walking around with ink on my face until I found a bathroom" He said gratefully, "I should probably be more prepared for such occasions, although having said that I have never forgotten my inhaler since I was five".
When Emilius thought about he didn't actually know where anything was around the school, it had been pure luck that had led him to the library. "Erm, I don't suppose you have a map or something of the school do you?" he enquired, "It's just I have no idea where anything is". A hopeless grin spread across his face as he rubbed the back of his head with his clean hand in a sheepish manner.

Emilius grinned the same grin that Adelaide had seen a thousand times before on her childhood friend, Diego. This one was obviously clueless, so she pulled a wad of folded up paper from her shoulder bag.
"I'm still new myself, so I got one of the art students to draft this out for me," Adelaide said, unfolding five pieces of paper, being the basement, the ground floor, and the first, second and third floors, and then mumbled, "for twenty euros."
The redhead glanced at Emilius, and handed him the papers. "It's not hard to memorise your classrooms, and even if you forget, you can ask anyone, so I don't really need it anymore." She sat on the wooden table beside the blonde and looked at him. "Why am I getting the feeling you don't want to be here?"

Emilius took the map ant thanked Adelaide, "Do you want anything for it? Since you did pay for it" he said, rummaging in his pockets to see what he could offer, "Err.... I have some Pocky, that's about it at the moment". He was halfway through withdrawing the pocky from a satchel; he had for hand luggage, when she mentioned his discontent. Emilius stared at her, a shudder went down his spine as the feeling that she was reading his thoughts started to grow. "Erm...yeah....what made you think that?" he asked suspiciously. "I liked being home schooled but my mother and uncle always wanted to send me to a school and a recent change in circumstances allowed them to do so". He shifted a little, opened the pocky box, and began eating a stick of pocky in the fashion of a hamster without realising it.

Adelaide's eyes went wide when Emilius mentioned pocky. She tried to play it cool, but was too excited by the fact that the boy had a food that she had only ever seen in anime.
"Erm...yeah....what made you think that?" Emilius asked. "I liked being home schooled but my mother and uncle always wanted to send me to a school and a recent change in circumstances allowed them to do so."
Adelaide glanced out the window over her shoulder and replied, casually, "Why else would you have not gone up to your dorm yet?" She looked at the blonde. "You're in the 'There's no point in getting settled in' mindset. After all, after you send this blank piece of paper back home, they'll get the message right away."
The redhead tapped the piece of paper on the table and gave him a wry grin, just as he put a stick of pocky in his mouth. Adelaide grabbed a stick and put the tip in her mouth, absent-mindedly saying "Nom." as she did so. She leaned back on her hands, looking up at the ceiling and working her mouth so that the pocky rotated ever-so-slightly.
"Just out of curiousity, why would being homeschooled be better than this place. The whole school was designed to cater to our needs, so we might as well milk it. I'm already getting waffles made especially for me every morning." Adelaide said, through the pocky, and looked back at Emilius. "I'm guessing it's more than just getting homeschooled. You wanted to stay for a different reason. Maybe... a lady?" The redhead pondered aloud, more talking to herself at this point.

The once quirt library echoed briefly with Emilius's laughter. "I wish, I have no luck with women at all" he said, "I assume they think I'm a homosexual and to be honest I think if my luck doesn't improve in the next four years I'll end up submitting to a self-fulfilling prophecy". He ate a few more pocky sticks before continuing, "The reason I prefer to be at home is that I have a few... health issues and find it more comfortable dealing with them at home, also I don't have to worry about peers and the threat of sport". The memories of the P.E classes from his old primary school came back, along with the feeling of embarrassment which the classes created.

Adelaide watched as Emilius laughed, and spoke about how people thought it was gay. He went quiet for a second.
"Maybe it's the bangs." She replied, reaching up and flipping his fringe around a bit with her finger, catching small glimpses of his eyes.
"The reason I prefer to be at home is that I have a few... health issues and find it more comfortable dealing with them at home, also I don't have to worry about peers and the threat of sport." He said, and Adelaide nodded.
"Understandable, but there are always ways of getting out of P.E." She replied with a wink. "For example, by hidy-hole underneath the bleachers back in Louisiana."
The redhead thought for a minute, resisting the urge to put her hand up and play with Emilius' fringe again, and decided to once again glance over her shoulder at the window. It was a beautiful day.
"Say, where are you from anyway?"

Emilius smiled at her responses, glad that she hadn't pursued his reasons for poor health. "I'm from Rochester actually" he said proudly, "It's a smallish city in the south east of England". Although it wasn't the nicest of areas, Emilius still loved his hometown; it had character which he found interesting and comforting. Also the fact that Charles Dickens, Emilius's hero, had liked Rochester and based places in his books on buildings in Rochester made it all the more appealing to him.
"So are the other inmates nice here?" he asked, "I haven't spoken to any other students apart from you of course, so I was just wondering if you had spoken to any?". His curiosity was starting to get the better of him since, after thinking about Dickens; an idea had popped into his head. He now hoped that the students proved to be interesting characters which he could base his own on, like Dickens.

"I'm Louisianan myself. New Orleans, born and raised." Adelaide didn't divulge that she was, in fact, born in a mansion and raised by a nanny. "My family is one of the only pure bred Cajun family's left in the New Orleans parish." She didn't want to sound like she was bragging, but Emilius seemed interested in the people.
"So are the other inmates nice here?" The blondie asked, "I haven't spoken to any other students apart from you of course, so I was just wondering if you had spoken to any?"
Adelaide laughed her musical laugh for a second. "I've actually made it a point to meet as many students as I could. My roommates are all really sweet, giggly, girls. Down to earth, but they are all very... unique. And I've met a lovely fellow named Arkasel. He's a scientist." The redhead glanced across the room, trying to catch a glimpse of the Librarian, before settling her eyes back on Emilius.
"And now I've met you." She said, with a little smile; the kind of smile that signified something mysterious. "And I'm glad."
Adelaide suddenly hopped off the table and went back to where she had laid The Catcher in the Rye down. While she was in the Classics section, she noticed a copy of Bram Stoker's Dracula, so she snatched that up as well, and brought them back over to where Emilius was sitting.
"I could introduce you to some of the people I know. Or," She paused, breathlessly. "We could go and meet some people down in the cafe? It's about lunchtime now, right? Feel like going on a lunch date?"
The redhead smiled again, and offered him her hand.

Emilius cringed when he heard about the 'sweet, giggly, girls', he really wasn't into that sort of person. Since boyhood Emilius had always found the company of males and girls who weren't particularly feminine in nature more appealing. Whilst returning from a trip down memory lane Emilius noticed the books Adelaide was intending to read and smiled, "Nice selection you have there, the classics are far more enriching than any of that twilight drivel, I wish more people would appreciate true literature" he said whilst ruffling his hair.
When she extended her hand and suggested that they went to the refectory for lunch. He hesitated, not sure if he really wanted to go and meet others. Suddenly his stomach growled loudly, he hadn't eaten since the morning he left. After a moment of scratching his left forearm, Emilius took Adelaide's hand stood up from the table. "So is it common practice for people where you come from to hold hands when out and about in public?" he asked, "Where I come from people tend to keep themselves to themselves unless their dating".

Emilius mentioned her books and made a quick comment about Twilight.
"Agreed." Adelaide said, as Emilius took her had and she began to lead him around the Classics shelf.
"So is it common practice for people where you come from to hold hands when out and about in public?" Emilius asked, "Where I come from people tend to keep themselves to themselves unless they're dating."
Adelaide let out a small laugh. "Hmmm, a prude, are we?" The girl smirked at the obviously uncomfortable boy. She wasn't phazed. There was no reason to be. Adelaide didn't think of leading someone by the hand as some act of romance. "Don't worry about your suitcases. No one will bother them."
Adelaide half dragged Emilius out of the library and across the great hall to the dining hall.
