The topics of discussion had drifted over towards how many drinks they had ingested so far and Arkasel was quick to figure out it and let her know. The girl burst into laughter as she repeated the number, her accent even stronger as she told him how many drinks got her to do some things which made him chuckle a little as he nodded gently. "Takes around fourteen before the world gets little blurry and things seem better for me. When I get to around twenty three or so I'll be holding off for a few minutes" he replied, leaving out that around the thirty mark was when he was absolutely banjaxed and would be stumbling up the halls holding onto the walls like most nights. But tonight he didn't plan on drinking quite so much... maybe a few less due to the company he was keeping.
He even took a few moments to notice her arm was linked into his, but for once physical contact didn't bother him as much. Normally a hug or such made him freeze up and feel awkward, this felt more friendly and like he was helping to keep her from going to the floor as the drink piled up. When she mentioned she might swear he told her not to worry but she replied back about her nanny telling her that swearing was none to lady-like which made him chuckle a little as he refilled their beakers.
"So it may seem but I was also told drinking is none to gentlemanly and neither is science rather than sport. Sometimes a few rules need to be broken" he replied as he lifted his up and took a swig from it, this time swallowing it instantly instead of savouring to get a little more drunk a little faster. "Besides, nanny's not watching you now is she? No? Then do what you want, it's a general rule of the world" he added after with a tiny grin as he felt the drink begin to hit him.

Adelaide laughed when Arkasel laughed. She didn’t expect it from him, but then again, the more they drank, the more comfortable they became together. He spoke about what happened to him when he had fourteen and twenty-three drinks. The redhead had never really remembered what happened to her at that many. By that time she would probably end up jumping head first into Granger’s bayou, as she did most times she got drunk with the boys back home, insisting that none of them would be eaten by alligators.
Adelaide was pleasantly surprised that Arkasel didn’t stiffen when she held his arm so close to her. She was glad that he was finally warming up to her, even if it took a few drinks first. Maybe, by the end of the night, they’d be friends. Adelaide stood and pondered the affects of the alcohol, and where it could possibly lead.
As Arkasel tempted her to break the rules by swearing, Adelaide laughed again. He ended it by saying that she should do what she wanted.
“Maybe I should do what I want.” Adelaide said, and then thought, “But not right now.”
The redhead downed her drink, this one hitting her almost instantly. She gave a very unlady-like hiccup and laughed again. “I can’t believe you’re tellin’ me to break the rules. It was the last thing I expected from you. I was all ready to be the one to tell you to break the rules. I had a plan an’ everythin’.”
Adelaide smiled and clutched Arkasel’s arm a little tighter, swaying slightly as she did so. “So wait, you have to keep me up-to-date on how many I’ve had. Or else I might do somethin’ undesirable.”

As the two continued to drink in the lab it seemed less and less like his usual lonely haunt and more warm and cheerier seeming. He was even admitting to what happened to him at certain drinks numbers, something he normally kept very quiet since it was something people could take advantage of if they knew how to use it. But Adelaide seemed to be safe enough to trust with it, namely because she was drinking at a fast enough rate and was clinging onto him for dear life to hold herself up and he was OK with it, something even rarer.
He told her what he thought and that she should do what she wanted and Adelaide burst into a laugh before accepting that maybe she should before downing her drink and he matched it, knocking back his own. But he nearly knocked a part of it back up as he coughed midway through swallowing as she hiccuped and burst into a coughing fit of quiet laughter for a few moments.
She came off with a small speech of disbelief that he was telling her to break the rules since he was the last one she expected to as she had a plan to tell him to. "Hey I'm not a mathematician with their strict rules. Scientists know we have to break a few sometimes... I just chose to apply it in other aspects of my life" he replied with a shrug as he filled up the drinks again, his arm clutched a little tighter by her as he did as she asked how many she had and a mention of doing bad things.
"You've had about ten and a bit, this would put it to twelve" he replied as he poured himself out a double and lifted it swirling. "This will put me at twelve and a bit" he added after as he took a sip of it and noted how the big beaker was slowly draining it's way down.

Adelaide glanced up at Arkasel, with a wry grin. Apparently, scientists knew to break the rules every-so-often, and this was obviously amusing to the redhead. To her, Arkasel seemed like the last person in the word to break the rules, but after she thought about it, she could have had it wrong.
After all, Arkasel was the one who knew how to make his own alcohol, and he was the one that set up the meeting. Then he encouraged her to swear. It took her a while, but Adelaide finally realised that the dark-haired boy wasn't as hard to be friends with as she had originally assumed. In fact, it seemed like he was the bad influence on her. She laughed at the thought and blinked at Arkasel.
"So if scientists break the rules, why are you breaking them with me?" She said, downing her drink and smirking. "We met yesterday and you're letting me hang off you like a monkey. At first you were awkward, but now you seem to like it." The redhead leant her head on Arkasel's shoulder. "You've been at the school for years and yet you're warming up to a stranger so quickly. Why?"
It seemed that Adelaide had gotten to the point where she would say whatever was on her mind without a second thought. It was something that she shouldn't do in front of stangers, but Arkasel just seemed so nice to her, and she was interested in seeing where the conversation went.

Drinking was turning out to be rather fun that night, rather than an attempt to try and forget everything bad that had happened to him like he did most other nights. Albeit he was drinking a lot slower he had some form of company that he got along with, that didn't have him totally petrified into a corner like most others since she was that jumpy and open. Her sudden burst of laughter pulled him from his thoughts and he looked at her as she asked why he broke the rules with her if scientists did so before necking her drink quickly.
She went off on a little questioning speech as she rested her head on him as he knocked back his own drink if a few swigs, savouring the taste as he did. ”Because...” he said as finished off the last of it and filled up the beakers again. ”I'm used to breaking them, another nearby doesn't seem much different” he replied as he looked at his drink for a moment, the world getting a tiny bit fuzzy and blurry as he looked at it but not enough to make him worry. ”Well for once thing I am quite on my way to being drunk, which I have read and been told is very good for helping with sociality” he added after as he took a drink of his beaker again, this time leaving about a third as he put it back down.
”That and since you're new I thought it might be easier to find your way from a nerd before you plunged into the deep waters of the schools social circle. Give you a better fighting chance at making friends rather than being stuck with me” he said after, a kick to his own self-confidence but one that he believed in. He never really thought of himself as much use outside the lab, what he was doing now was unbelievable to himself that he could get along that well with others.

Adelaide knocked back another beaker of moonshine, and leant heavily on Arkasel. Feeling a little unsteady, the girl grasped her companion's arm and dragged him over to a clear space of countertop, away from his science stuff, and pulled herself onto the counter, using Arkasel as a help to get up.
They were now facing each other, Adelaide holding her empty beaker in one hand, and holding onto Arkasel with the other. Continuing her conversation, as if they hadn't moved at all, the redhead said, "Stuck with you? What if I want to be friends with you? What if I was the one who sought you out, huh? Never thought of that, did ya', cher'?"
Adelaide nodded, as if it would make him believe that she wanted to be friends with him. "You see, my dear boy, you put yourself down constantly - like I haven't noticed - and I think, in a way, that is your way of justifying your withdrawal from the people around you. Take tonight as an example: you really were going to spend the night alone in the lab, until we met, that is. And honestly? I think the only reason you've warmed up to dear old Adelaide so quickly is because you're drinking. It's not like I'm complaining, or anything, I mean, anything that will get you to open up is fine by me, just as long as you know what you're doing."
Adelaide nodded again, this time to reassure herself of the warning she was about to give in a very heavily Southern accent.
"I'll let you know now, darlin', I'm bad news. Trouble with a capital T." She leant forward and whispered, as if it was a secret, "I'm pretty much a badass."
She was drunk, alright. No doubt about it. Adelaide would probably go on in this way for the rest of the evening if she was any drunker, and definitely if Arkasel wouldn't stop her.

Adelaide seemed determined to try and keep up with him as she slugged back another glass of the lab made booze before leaning harder on Arkasel like he had suspected she would. But what he hadn't expected was for her to drag him over two seats to the empty patch of the counter and use him as a vault pole to hop onto the bench as he stood in front of it, his balance almost swaying a little. She countered back to his reply as she questioned if he had ever thought she would have wanted to be friends with him and if she had sought him out as she questioned if he had thought it.
He had not....
"No, but then again that's because I'm used to the mindset that if I get sought out it's for trouble or questioning my availability for other work" he replied as he looked down for a moment to the ground out of shame. "Never been much of a friendly guy in most peoples eyes" he added after as he looked back up before she continued about his put downs and the mentality behind it. She questioned his plans for the night that he would have been there regardless of their meeting and that he was only being more friendly as he was drinking which she didn't complain about but rather hoped he knew what he was doing.
"I just keep my self views in line with what they are and of course I do... When you spend most nights drinking you learn to rather quickly know what you're doing... Just not always question it" he replied as he looked back to his glass again and took another swig that bit at the back of his tongue. She spoke again however, this time her accent a lot thicker as she warned him that she was trouble with a capital to try and emphasise it, before leaning in and making him freeze for a moment as she whispered about being a badass.
The alcohol however did it's job very quickly and he replied back in a rather thick Northern accent, "I'm from the roughest end of a bad part of Ireland. You're not trouble compared to that, maybe just mischief". Tonight was changing quite rapidly from his original plan of drinking and sleeping like normal since he had met her, now it had just gone off a completely different and rather more interesting tangent as he swirled his drink in his glass.

Arkasel looked slightly embarrassed when he realised that Adelaide was spending time with him because she actually wanted to be friends with him. She smiled to herself at how clueless he seemed when it came to the social side of life. He ended it with another excuse, this time saying he didn’t seem friendly to others.
“HOGWASH!” Adelaide exclaimed, setting her glass down on the table, and gripping Arkasel’s arm tighter. “You’ve been one of the sweetest people here to me, and even though I had to go out of my way to get it out of you, you’re turning into a very accommodatin’ host. You have the potential to be a good friend, or somethin’ else, so don’t give me any of that friendliness bull shit.”
Adelaide nodded her head, happy with the mild telling-off she had given her new friend, and finally smiled.
She gave a little laugh when he said that he knew what he was doing. He was referencing the drinking, but she was referencing something else. It was obvious that Arkasel had little to no clue about being social. When she pulled him closer, to inform him of her badassery, she felt him go stiff and almost laughed again.
Arkasel seemed to quickly reply, as Adelaide leaned back again, about Ireland being rougher than she. “Clearly you haven’t seen a New Orleans girl pushing through a gallon of vodka and soda before jumping into Granger’s bayou, completely starkers.” She laughed before continuing. “And if Ireland is such a rough place to grow up, then why are you scared of the female touch? Surely there are women up North?”
Adelaide gave a smirk, pulling her companion closer, hoping to get him to freeze up again.

Arkasel had told her that he didn't come off as the most friendly of people, mostly because he kept withdrawn and avoiding others to stay out of trouble unless needed. Adelaide seemed to disagree as she shouted out and grabbed his arm tighter before going into a little speech of his behaviour to her despite the work she'd had to do to get it. He gave a weak shake of his head after it and a sigh, "Yeah, not friendly because I tend to hide away would be an easier way to explain it, not really been much of a friends guy for that" he replied with a weak shrug.
Adelaide laughed when he told her he knew what he was doing when he was drinking, making him slightly confused as to why it would be humorous. But he dismissed it quickly enough when she moved closer and made him freeze with a simple touch as her attempts to impress him of her badness made little impact. He let her know that she had next to nothing on him and she tried once more to impress him with a tale of Vodka and Mixer before skinny dipping which left him slightly stunned as he tried to avoid thinking of it.
He failed miserably as she woke him back up with a question of Ireland being tough that he was scared of women and there had to be women there. He shook his head a little as she tugged him closer, his arm tensing up again as she did. "There are... It's just I'm used to physical touching being either hit or a sign that I'm going to be decked. Not used to the female one, still keep thinking it'll be the same as always. Another bloke about to take a swing at me" he replied, embarrassed but at the same time hoping she was understanding enough of it.

Arkasel explained that he hides himself away (something that Adelaide found to be a little obvious), and wasn’t really the sort that cared for friends anyway. The last statement made her raise her eyebrows slightly and she tilted her head to the side a bit.
“You don’t seem to be that bothered with the fact that I want to be your friend. Actually, you seem to want it. I mean, you were the one who came to listen to my music, and I guess that could be just the allure of my amazin’ harpist skills, but then again, you didn’t run off when we started to speak. You didn’t try to get out of this meetin’ either.” Adelaide looked into Arkasel’s eyes, trying to find some sort of openness in his closed off manner. “So let me ask you: do you want this? Do you want this or are you actively tryin’ to find an escape?” The redhead’s grip lessened slightly from around his arm, but she kept him close.
When Arkasel expressed his expectance of physical violence being the only reason he would be touched, Adelaide formed a fist with her right hand and slowly reached out to give him a gentle punch in the centre of his chest. She grinned, wryly, and said, “Phew! Glad that’s over. So now I’ve hit you, can you stop being such a tin man?” The redhead put her hand back onto Arkasel’s arm and laughed. “I’ll give you a minute to recover from my vicious attack.”

When he had tried to explain as to why he wasn't a very friendly seeming guy due to hiding, Adelaide seemed to have gotten it in a slightly different manner. She mentioned that he didn't seemed to bothered with the fact she was trying to be friendly to him and that he seemed to really want it. Her theory continued further about him listening to her music and that he hadn't ran after which put away a bragging thought of her skills being the reason since he hadn't tried to get out of the evening.
"I do but you got a little mixed up..." he replied to her interrogation as he looked to the side. "It's not that I don't want friends... It's just rather difficult when you're hiding away working and drinking a bit to much to make a good impression" he replied before revealing his reasons for having issues with physical contact. She replied to that by pulling her hand back into a fist and slowly bumping him in the chest after he gave a minor flinch of his left foot moving back from habit.
She grinned and made a false show of seeming relieved it was over and that since she'd hit him asking if he would drop the act, before grabbing his arm with a laugh and said she'd give him a minute. He actually did need to few seconds to realise what had happened, namely since he'd frozen up from his normal reaction of jumping back. It made him chuckle after a few moments as he nodded his headed gently a couple of times. "I'll give it a go... No promises but" he replied as he took another rather heavy swig from his drink, some people got courage from old memories and others from friends.
His came from genetic disposition to wanting a drink and the judgement clouding it offered when he needed it to get past his own insecurities.

Adelaide rolled her eyes, with a smile, as Arkasel continued to try to explain what he had meant. By this point, to her, it seemed like he was just falling into a deep hole of excuses. Like he was trying to find some way of justifying the fact that he was too scared to try to meet people, and find friends, and be the sort of person he wanted to be. But Adelaide wasn't the type to tell people what they should be doing, but instead what she wanted to see them doing. Luckily, this wasn't one of those situations, as the redhead was getting everything she wanted out of Arkasel just by having him near her and drinking with her. On that note, it seemed like the older boy was being a very good sport with all her on and off teasing and joking. Not only that, but she was well on her way into the booze, and he didn't seem to want to pull away at this point, which was a plus.
Adelaide supposed that now was the time to stop pestering Arkasel, and go on with her light teasing.
She was surprised when he had frozen as she gave him a light punch, even though it was such a tiny and slow punch, something that he must've seen coming. It was enough to make her raise her eyebrows and comment.
"I can't believe you were actually worried that I would hit you. You went all stiff!" The redhead shook her head gently and snickered. "There are so many things I could do to you right now. You'd probably faint!"
She smiled, hoping that she wasn't annoying him too much, raising a hand to poke him in the middle of the chest. "So tell me, Science Boy: why are you so hesitant?"
Adelaide was honestly curious about Arkasel. There were things about him that just seemed so unreachable, but of course that wasn't going to stop her from seeking out very little darks part of him. It was a hobby of hers, and she wanted to know why he seemed so hesitant to jump into things. It looked like, from her point of view, he dipped his toes into the water before wading in. It was much unlike her, who cannonballed into life.

Three things had always come naturally to Arkasel, Equations, Understanding of the governing laws of science and Drinking. The third of which had only come about in the recent years, it was nice to meet someone else who was able to deal with it as well, albeit to not quite has high a degree but that was to be expected from what she had told him about her home life. He tried to give the real reason behind him not doing well at making friends but it seemed to be at no avail, he just couldn't get the point across that he lived in a very different lifestyle and manner than most that made things rather difficult for him to deal with.
But when he revealed to her the reason for his freezing she seemed to be in disbelief, even reaching out to fake a punch that he still reacted to out of instinct that it would be a harder hit. It wasn't and it seemed to surprise her with acute eyebrows as she questioned if he was really worried since he'd gone stiff before she laughed. "Force of habit, you learn to react to everything or you get a set of permanent black eyes" he replied before she went on about there being so many things she could do that he would faint. "Unless one of them involves the beaker smashed into my head or something blunt to knock me out I'm not so sure" he replied back, sure that he knew what the worst that could happen was since he'd had it done before.
She poked further into his life however, literally with a jab at his chest as she asked why he was so hesitant. "Hesitant's good, being it means that sometimes you miss the bus that comes flying down the road if you don't think twice. I just prefer to think in a more controlled manner before taking risks" he replied, slightly speedily out of nerves and the fact that she was prying at a slightly more personal matter and that he didn't have the ability to ask her not to since that would just hold her interest further.

Adelaide let go of Arkasel’s arm and rubbed her hands together. She pushed her black hood down off her head and ran her fingers through her freshly dyed red hair. She was still sitting on the edge of the countertop, so she put her hands down behind her and leant back slightly, thinking about what was happening. She’d spent a while with this mysterious boy, yet still only felt like she was only scratching the surface. There was something underneath all the lab coats and vague answers. Something dark and violent, and he seemed ashamed of it. Of course, all of this was just conjecture; an idea of the person behind the safety goggles that was likely to be fictionalized by Adelaide to the point where he was just a modern day rehashing of Mr. Darcy. Still, the redhead was always a sucker for the tall, dark and handsome men.
Arkasel replied to her joke of making him pass out rather nonchalantly, giving her the feeling that it was maybe a sensitive area for him. He was obviously nervous about the idea of being touched, and Adelaide hoped that he would mind so much after a while being her friend. She wasn’t a particularly huggy person, but she liked to put her hands on people’s shoulders and arms. It was a comforting thing that worked in Louisiana. Slapping someone on the back with your open palm gave them the feeling of mateship. It was something that friends did. Drunks would walk around together with their arms around each other’s shoulders. It was just the way it went over there, but upon moving to the school, it became apparent that the physical side of friendship was significantly lessened. Regardless, Adelaide was a Louisianan, and she wasn’t going to give up her nature.
“Don’t worry. I could never hit a guy like you.” The redhead swung her legs a little, absent-mindedly. “And using a beaker as a weapon seems a little intense. Maybe a 2 x 4, or an empty bottle of Chartreuse depending on the situation.” She shot him a little grin to show that she was joking.
Arkasel quickly replied to her question of his hesitancy in a vague, awkward manner. It seemed, from his reply, that he wasn’t comfortable with the way the conversation was going, so Adelaide decided to take it in a completely different direction with another question.
The redhead lifted a hand to take off her safety goggles and used the end of which to gently scratch her neck. “Just out of curiosity, would you be interesting in doing this again sometime in the future?”
Adelaide felt the question to be a good way of getting feedback. The redhead was a performance based person, and she needed a way of being told how she was doing. The evening, in her opinion, seemed to be going quite well, but she could never tell unless she straight out asked. If he said yes, Adelaide would go on the idea that she was going well in her attempt at friendship. If no, she would decide to change her tactics. If he came up with an idea of giving her alcohol without having the evening, she would be suspicious, and most likely want to find out what she had done wrong. However it went Adelaide would find out how she was doing friendship-wise, which was what she needed.
Luckily, it looked like Arkasel hadn’t caught on to the fact that she was more interested in him than she led on, and though she already had set her sights on the Librarian (something that she wasn’t about to give up on anytime soon), she was going to keep her feelings under wraps, no matter how drunk she got. It was something that she could pull off quite nicely, after years of practice. Being one of the boys led to little romantic activity, due to the awkwardness that followed, so Adelaide was a professional at pretending.

The night had gone well albeit for a few bumps along the way, they'd drank a large amount and had a friendly discussion, learned more of each other and realised exactly what became of the the other when drunk. However Arkasel had managed to bollocks it up with his issues of physical contact, something that hadn't been much of a problem until now and only proved exactly how much of a one it was. If he was going to stay friends with her he'd have to adapt to accept it, he couldn't stiffen up like a statue at every touch and get away with it though he'd be paranoid of loosing his reaction times and getting decked heavily one day.
Adelaide tried to reassure him that she could never hit a guy like him with her legs swinging like a child on a counter up in the air. Before adding that using a beaker was a bit to far as a weapon and that a plank of wood or a bottle would do fine for the situation alongside s grin. "What can I say, somethings a lot less scary when you've been hit hard enough by it before" he replied with a weak grin and nod of his head, a fact he learned years ago and the main reason why hockey sticks and cricket bats did nothing to intimidate him compared to shovel when brandished threateningly.
When she asked why he was so hesitant he froze up again and gave a traditional response in a speedy manner that made him come off as terrified... perfectly fitting but not what he wanted her to know. She didn't seem phased by it but, instead removing her glasses to scratch an itch and ask if he would be up for doing it again some time. It made him sigh and nod with a weak chuckle, "Yeah... Yeah I would, hopefully I won't tank it in the same manner I have tonight" he replied to her before knocking back the remains of his glass which was rather full to near a double.
He had to admit he did like her, she was interesting, from a completely different background and a completely different subject and was still up for bending a few rules. It just made her stand out a lot more to him and feel a little confused. "Maybe next time I could wrangle another performance out of you rather than sneaking up" he added after, the bite of the alcohol taking precedence in his mind over what his tongue had just gone lose with before he realised it.

Adelaide smiled slightly when Arkasel spoke about being hit with things, but her mind began to buzz. It wasn’t very polite for one to ask such things, but she was dying to know what he had been hit with. He looked like such a good kid, besides the black eye, and hearing these titbits of information made her curious as to what type of situations he’d been in. But a conversation like that would be for another night. A much drunker night, when Adelaide wasn’t so afraid of saying the wrong thing, and when Arkasel had grown into her a bit more. As a compromise for not asking about his past again, Adelaide linked her arm in his again, rewarding herself for keeping her personal questions to herself.
When Arkasel sighed and nodded, before hesitantly replying that he’d like to do it again, Adelaide frowned a little, wondering what the sigh was for, and hoping desperately that he wasn’t just saying it to make her happy. When he went on to saying that he wouldn’t screw it up next time, she couldn’t help but laugh out loud.
“Tanked? You think you tanked?” Adelaide smiled and rolled her eyes slightly. Typical Ark. “Look at me. You really think you messed up the evening? You supplied me with very strong alcohol and let me grab onto you like a child. I’ve had a lovely evening so far.”
Adelaide nodded, delighted at the idea of giving Arkasel a performance next time. “Of course. I could never say no to something like that.”
Adelaide gave herself a little nod and a tiny smile, praising herself on Arkasel’s positive reaction to her proposal of another meeting. She was a little proud of herself. She’d gone almost the whole evening without calling him “cher’ or darlin’” and she’d kept from suggesting them going down to the pool for a midnight dip, which was something that happened almost every time she got a bit plastered. All in all, Adelaide was happy with herself.

Drinking alone was a good way to forget things and pass the time in Arkasel's book normally, but drinking with others was a lot more interesting and he was finding himself hoping to do it more often in the future with Adelaide. Even if the topics weren’t the most comfortable for him to share, he felt a little better with each one he revealed of his own accord without pressure. Admitting the not being afraid of some things seemed the make her frown however and he feared he had made himself out to be a thug once more in her eyes. ”Like a Horror film... The monsters a lot scarier when you haven't seen it but once it appears it's not all that terrifying” he added after in a weak attempt to explain in a rapidly thought answer that was developed from a partially drunk mind.
Eventually but she offered to drink again and he sighed cheerily with a mention that he'd like to do it again without messing up this time. However she burst into laughter which made him raise an eyebrow curiously as well as shrink down a little in feeling that she was agreeing with the thought. That was until she asked if he really thought he had, ”Well yeah...” he said quietly as he shrugged and let his head fall a little closer into his neck as he felt a hell of a lot smaller, his arm still locked in hers as he seemed to feel like he was hanging in the air on it.
When she spoke again explaining the evening and telling him to look at her and saying the things he'd done she'd called it a lovely evening. It made him feel a hell of a lot better but he still had the niggling doubt she was just being nice albeit it was just a doubt. ”Thanks” was all he could manage to offer back to her as she tried to reassure him that he hadn't tanked it this time.
When he felt the drink hit him and her cheery disposition attempt to pull him further out of his shell, he found himself suggesting that she put on another performance the next time they wound up drinking together. She seemed to be OK with the idea, smile still planted on her face and a nod as she told him that she couldn't refuse such a thing. ”Looks like I can look forward to another rendition of Ms Adelaide” he replied as he nodded curtly once back and poured a majority of the remains of his beaker back down his throat, only a small bit remaining for a tiny swig after.
So it was going well... For now anyway that was...

When Arkasel explained why he wasn’t afraid of being hit by certain things, Adelaide gave a half nod.
“I suppose you’re right, but then again, after being stuck upside down for two hours by your left leg in the big tree hanging over Granger’s bayou is pretty traumatic for a thirteen-year-old.” Adelaide shook her head with a half-smile. “And I’m still terrified of that tree.”
The redhead reached over and picked up her empty beaker, giving a little shake. She looked up at Arkasel with honest eyes and asked, “Fill me up?”
She could tell, just from the way he spoke, that Arkasel didn’t believe her when she said she was having a good time. In all honesty, Adelaide was very easy going. She would probably have a good time no matter where she was, just because she would make it fun for herself. She was creative like that, and didn’t find herself bored often. Life moved fast, and Adelaide didn’t want to miss it.
“You’ll understand soon.” Adelaide said, after Arkasel thanked her. “Situations don’t have to go a certain way. I’ve learnt to get what I want out of the people around me.” The redhead paused. “I don’t mean that I use people, it’s just: I like to feel like I’ve not wasted my time, so I go out of my way to make things constructive. Making friends, or practicing instruments, or even just cheering myself up will do. I don’t like to go through my life and feel like I’ve got nothing to show for it.”
The redhead shrugged. “Whatever.” She said, looking away from Arkasel for a second, then looking back. “The point is, Ark, I like you. And I like spending time with you.”
She nodded to herself, reassuring herself that her random outburst of meaning in a seemingly shallow conversation was an effect of the alcohol.

Arkasel had offered his reasoning behind why he wasn't afraid of being assaulted by some objects rather than others and it seemed he'd done it correctly as Adelaide nodded in understanding. She agreed but also made a mention of hanging from a tree over a river for two hours being a terrifying thing for a child and a half smile added as she said she was still scared of it. "Ouch... Sounds like one hell of a bad day" he replied as he felt a twinge in the back of his ankle out of thought of what it must have been like.
But his train of thought was cut short as she shook her beaker a little and he looked down to catch her eye as she asked for a refill. A host to oblige, he took what was left of the beaker and poured in enough to fill it, the remains of the container just enough to fill each one once more before it sat empty and they had drank more than should have been drank split over a week for both of them together, each with ease.
After he had thanked her for the boost of confidence that he hadn't made a total cock-up of the situation as of yet she told him he would soon understand, leaving him a little confused with a cocked eyebrow until she went further to explain that situations didn't always have to go down a certain route. That was until she went further about how she had learnt to get what she wanted out of people that made him feel a little like he might have just been used for his chemistry knowledge which wouldn't have been the first time.
He was almost about to drop his arm and move away, seal himself off like usual even though he felt like he'd had a harsh kick to the teeth already. But she tried to repair what she meant by explaining it wasn't that she used people but rather she preferred to feel like she had used her time wisely. It made a little more sense but still left him a little wounded at the thought that he may have been thought of as useless once more like his mind told him most of the time.
Her explanation made perfect sense as he nodded quietly, but he was still doing his best to try and not tug away and hide off like he desperately wanted to. This was brand new territory for the Irish boy and already he was afraid of getting hurt in it though he could agree with her thoughts. But after a little while and finally speaking again she brushed it off with a shrug and nonchalant comment that left him a little confused before she looked away then back and told him she liked him and spending time with him.
That came as a momentary stun, he hadn't know anyone who liked him or wanted to spend time with him in most of his life except for his little brother. So it took him a few moments to wonder if it was just the alcohol talking or if she was telling the truth... He decided for once on trusting the latter. "First time for everything..." was all he could say before knocking back the last of his drink and letting it burn his throat before swallowing with a sigh of relief.
"I like you to, and it's been fun the two meetings so far" he replied with a weak smile, the alcohol hitting him a little harder and forcing an effect of euphoria on him.

Adelaide nodded. “’Twas a rough day for me. One that I’d not like to repeat.”
The redhead watched Arkasel as he refilled her beaker with the lab-made booze. She was glad she had a friend that understood her heritage. He, of course, had a heritage of his own to live up to, and it only helped that they were similar. She was just happy that Arkasel wasn’t the type that would furiously argue. He seemed fairly easy going, which was a refreshing change. Most of the kids at the school were either very nervous about meeting new people, or were so defensive that they wouldn’t move an inch. In short, things with Arkasel were easier than she would have guessed.
It was when the taller boy seemed surprised by her confession of fondness toward him that Adelaide sighed gently and nodded. Of course he wasn’t going to feel the same way. After all, they had just met, and Adelaide wasn’t the easiest person to hang around with, but for some reason she was enjoying her time around him more than she had with any of the other people she had met at the school.
Arkasel commented on there being a first time for everything. The redhead felt like an idiot, and quickly took a helpful gulp of her drink and blinked as it hit her. She swayed slightly, and grabbed onto the taller boy’s arm, but let go as soon as she knew what she was doing and looked away.
When Arkasel replied by saying he liked her as well, Adelaide felt a brief twang of relief, but it was quickly followed by doubt.
“Yeah...” She replied, and swirled the booze around in her half-empty beaker. Adelaide looked up at Arkasel. “Are you sure?”
Sometimes Adelaide forgot that she was still a teenage girl. She was, and always had been, capable of feeling awkward and uncomfortable. Fortunately, that feeling was almost always overpowered by her ability to not care what other people thought of her, but this time it seemed that the alcohol was to powerful to overcome.
Adelaide shook her head immediately after she asked if Arkasel was sure. “Don’t answer that.” The redhead took another gulp and swayed as it hit her, becoming even more unstable on the counter she was sitting on.
