OOC: This thread is a continuation of the Library thread "What is the first thing you do in your new school?"
---------------------
Adelaide led Emilius into the Cafeteria where almost the whole student body were getting lunch on their Saturday. Some of the older students spent their weekends out in the town, but mostly the students spent the day catching up with their work. The start of the year was the hardest.
"Come on." Adelaide murmured, still holding the blonde boy's hand and leading him through the crowd to an empty table that could seat six people.
The girl finally let go of his hand and took a seat, motioning for him to sit opposite her. "People will come up to us, but until then, how about you tell me about the books that you actually do like? Twilight it lame, I know, but what are you into?"

Angie has spent the day studying, almost not but her physical problems had made it hard for her to sit down and do her work for a long period of time. Such was the case today. She was constantly standing, then sitting or other forms of moving about. Not so much she had to stay in bed. It was really just when she tried to do it for more than twenty minutes at a time, which made some of her classes rather difficult on her.
She had taken some pain killers about twenty minutes ago and she could feel them starting to kick in. The girl had to admit, sometimes they did the trick and she would probably never sleep, if it wasn’t for the nighttime ones and the sleeping pills. Once the girl felt up to it, she grabbed her things and shoved them in her backpack and headed out of the empty classroom, some where she knew she wouldn’t be disturbed.
Angie headed towards the cafeteria and wondered when she would ever get to people starring at her arms. They did even as she walked down the hall. The girl stopped, pulled out a light jacked and covered her arms so she wouldn’t feel self-conscious about. She entered the line grabbed a turkey sandwich and a coffee, the girl practically lived on coffee. Blue eyes glanced around and instantly spotted her redheaded roommate, talking with some guy that Angie didn’t recognize.
”Hey,” She smiled as she approached the table. ”Do you two mind if I join you?” It didn’t look exactly like a lunch date but Angie always asked as it was the polite thing to do. And she had arrived after the question had been asked of the boy.

After taking a seat Emilius gazed around the refectory, the architecture interested him along with the smell of what seemed to be apple turnovers. However the number of students started to make him feel uneasy.
Just when he was about to respond to Adelaide's question, after thinking for a moment to form a mental list of novels and short story's, Emilius acknowledged the presence of another girl asking to join them. "Erm, not at all" was his response, before he turned his attention back to Adelaide, "If it's alright with you that is". Emilius gave a polite smile to the newcomer whilst leaning back on his chair a little.

Adelaide looked up and smiled when she heard Angie's voice.
"We'd love you to join us." The girl replied. When Angie had sat down, Adelaide made introductions. "This is Angelina Morrison, my roommate. Angie, this is Emilius Raine. He's new, fresh in today."
Once the pair of them looked fairly aquainted, Adelaide gestured for Emilius to answer her question. It may have seemed silly, but she honestly cared what sort of books he was in to, but also because once he answered the question, he would most likely return it, and Adelaide would be able to enlighten him about the joys and horrors of Mark Z. Danielewski.
When Emilius was still thinking up his answer, Adelaide caught Angie's eye and winked at her, as if to say, "Look what I found." And subtly nodded her head at Emilius.

Angie nodded, put down her tray and sat down. She couldn’t tell much about the boy and did what she tried to do with most people, hold of judgment but he seemed nice, so far. ”It’s nice to meet you.” Angie was sitting across the table from Emilius, which made shaking hands difficult so she simply smiled at him.
Realizing the two had been in a conversation, she took a sip of her coffee and a bite of her sandwich as she listened, hoping she could pick up on what they had been discussing, before she showed up. Though, her eyes caught Adeliade’s wink, to which Angie shot back a very quick sideway’s glance which said she understood.

Completely oblivious to the girls exchange of looks, Emilius continued the conversation, "Likewise" he said to Angelina before turning his attention back to Adelaide, "Hmmm.... let me see now, well I am rather fond of the works of Stephen King, J.R.R. Tolkien, Oscar Wilde, H.G. Wells, Alan Moore, Erm J.B. Priestley, M.R. James, and Agatha Christie". He smiled, slightly embarrassed about how long the list was, "Don't ask about that last one" he added, "I had a long summer one time when stuck at my aunts, it was Christie or Mills and boon". He shuddered, thinking about a rainy afternoon when he had been coerced into reading a Mill and Boon book to his aunt. It had scarred him for life, causing Emilius to have spent many years repressing the memories.
"So what about you? what do you like to read?" he asked in return, directing at both of the girls.

Adelaide laughed when Emilius mentioned Mills and Boon. Her nanny, Jane, was into that romantic rubbish, and always chastised her when she read over her shoulder.
Adelaide didn’t pause for a second before giving her thoughts on Emilius’ taste in books. “I love all of those authors, but I’m more into Victorian literature. I love the Bronte sisters and George Elliot. I love Dracula, that’s always a good one, but if I’m going for some poetry, I’d go for Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Robert Browning.” The redhead thought for a second. “But then again, if I’m going for something a little bit more modern day, I love The Bell Jar, and this one,” She held up the copy of The Catcher in the Rye that sat on the table in front of her, “And then there is Terry Pratchett, but it really depends on what I’m in the mood for.”
Adelaide looked at Emilius, then at Angie, and then realised she’d been rambling. “What about you, Angie? Do you like to read?”

Angie ate and listened to the conversation which did make its way to her. When asked if she liked to read, the girl smiled and nodded. ”Yes,” She thought for a moment. ”I read most of whom you’ve both mentioned. Sylvia Plath, Stephen King though I prefer his older works, Tolkien, H.G. Wells, Orwell, Robert Browning is good but I prefer his poetry, Dickens, though, I’m not a big fan of Great Expectations, oh and I like some Shakespeare. She paused for another moment. ”I guess my guilty pleasure is Anne Rice, especially the Vampire Chronicles, those are really good books about Vampires as opposed to what’s out today.” She just realized what she said and looked as some girls sitting not with them but not too far away shot her a look. Angie just looked back towards her lunch companions trying to stifle a slight laugh. ”Sorry, not a big fan of the Twilight thing.”

"It's ok, Interview with a vampire was a brilliant piece, I haven't read it but I assume the book is better than the film, which was fantastic anyway" Emilius said, pleased that the people he had met so far were sane, "If I was an autocrat in charge of the world I would denounce the Twilight series as heresy against my dogma and all copies would be ritualistically burnt on Sundays until the world was liberated from the horrors of Stephenie Meyer, and the stain that tarnishes the works of Muse would fade". He paused realising that probably was a bit over the top and decided to change topic, "But I digress" he smiled awkwardly, "So you like George Elliot? I remember I studied Silas Marner for my English Literature GCSE. I still fail to understand how she managed to make a plot which contained theft, death and a secret marriage, dull. I don't suppose Middle March or Romola are any better?”

”Yes, the book is better and the entire series is written just as well.” She nodded. ”The movie was really well done. I was surprisingly impressed by it.” Well, Emilius certainly had an opinion about the Twilight series and one which Angie certainly could agree with. ”I’d certainly be fine with that.” She smiled at him. The topic turned to George Elliot someone who Angie had not gotten a chance to read yet. Though, she had thought about it, while stuck in the hospital but she wasn’t looking for anything like that. It was actually then that she had fallen in love with Anne Rice’s books and they helped get her mind off of other things.

"Dull?! DULL?!" Adelaide laughed. "Oh, my dear boy, I don't think you've exactly understood the whole point of Silas Marner. It's supposed to be so obviously realist that its almost like hearing the story from the woman down the road. The plot of the book was SUPPOSED to be real, or in your words: dull. George Eliot showed the characters as they are in real life, not the completely fictional people we see in books these days."
The redhead stopped herself before she went on. She obviously had some strong views on the works of George Eliot, but it probably wouldn't do her any favours by screaming them out in the middle of the cafeteria.
"As for the Anne Rice series, I liked The Vampire Lestat, but the rest were, in my opinion, rather average." The girl leaned back on her chair, thoughtfully. "In The Vampire Lestat, Lestat depicted himself as the worlds biggest asshole, and I just can't resist an asshole narrator."
Adelaide tapped The Catcher in the Rye as an indication to her affection for an antihero, and continued.
"But in Queen of the Damned, it seemed like he just went back to a big ball of fluff. His character deteriorated and he stopped being the vain and pompous, arrogant prick that I loved."
The redhead stopped, one last time, and sent Angie a smile. "But that's just my opinion." Adelaide looked back over at Emilius, still rocking on her chair and pointed at him. "Now you. Tell me about Stephen King. 'Salem's Lot, or It?"

"It wasn't the characters or plot that bothered me, it was just her writing style lost my interest" Emilius replied whilst examining a stain on the table, he concluded it was ketchup, "As for Lestat I was rather fond of him in Interview with a vampire, Louis however should have been garrotted for being a winy windbag".
It was at this moment that Emilius's attention was drawn to a corner of the room where a bland looking bimbo was spewing insolent comments about Muse, "Heretic" Emilius thought as he shot her a glare.
His focus was brought back immediately to the conversation when Adelaide mentioned Stephen King. "Well I haven't read Salem's lot yet, but It is brilliant, admittedly on one part actually scared me, some of the chapters were very disturbing, and some of the characters were annoying" He said chirpily, "despite this the plot is brilliant and like always his characters are believable".

Angie simply shrugged to what both of them said regarding the Vampire chronicles. What could she say? That it kept her mind occupied while spending a good portion of her time in a hospital over the summer not to mention the fact that she was trying not to think about the accident or her brother and reading that kind of thing happened to work. ”Well, I think Interview and the Vampire Lestat were the two best books in the series but it was interesting to see how the characters were in the other books. But I can understand you’re point.” Said to both of them. Truth was if circumstances had been different she probably wouldn’t have read those.
Stephen King’s works were something else she had read a lot of over the summer but had read some of his work prior to then. ”Oh, they were both really good. Salem’s Lot was a really good read. It was a more in-depth book though. Though, personally I think the Shining is the Stephen King book that everyone should read.”

"I concur" replied Emilius to Angelina, "That was the first of his books at I read, I think it's a shame that the film made it look like Jack was a psychopath form the beginning but the book shows how the hotel slowly changed him form a normal bloke into a homicidal maniac".
It was at this moment that Emilius's stomach let out a desperate plea for sustenance, "I think I better tend to my stomach before it dies". As he left his chair he scouted out where to obtain food and hurried off hastily, "I'll be right back!!!" he exclaimed as he went.

Adelaide glanced at Emilius with a raised eyebrow. "Normal bloke? You're joking, right? He broke his kid's arm. Out of anger. And his wife forgave him. And that was all before he even went for the hotel job. There is no way he was a 'normal bloke'." The redheaded girl had begun to swing her arms about as she spoke, obviously passionate. "The whole point of the book was of how the hotel brought out his evil side. The side of him that his wife had been living in fear of their whole lives, and when they go there, it comes out just because he has writers block! The novel demonstrates the good and evil inside all of us, and how the littlest things can turn us from mice to monsters!"
Adelaide put her arms down, quietly, and regained her composure. At that point, Emilius got up to get some lunch, and the girl hoped that it wasn't because she had caused a scene. She turned to Angie and put her elbow on the table.
"That was probably an over-reaction." She thought for a second. "But I think that the best Stephen King novel is Carrie."

Angie got very quiet at this debate. To be honest that was the worst part of the book to get though for her. She actually had read the book years ago and due to circumstances had decided not to reread it this past summer when she had all that time to herself. She just sat back took a sip of her now cold coffee and listened. Not really knowing what to say without saying too much. And she certainly didn’t want to infer anything that wasn’t true, which, could happen as people get the wrong idea. Think it’s personal or there must be something behind that, it was just hard to read of a parent doing that to their own child. Angie’s parents, well, they had their own way of doing things but she had never physically been hit by them.
She simply nodded as Emilius got up and got some lunch. And turned her head so she was facing Adelaide as the other girl spoke. ”Oh, “ Getting her mind back to the topic on hand and away from where it was a moment ago. ”Carrie was really good.” She paused. ”I wasn’t a big fan of the Tower series by him though.” She tried but it just wasn’t her thing.
Angie felt her phone buzz. ”Excuse me.” She pulled it out and looked at the number, then proceeded to turn it off. Not who the girl wanted to speak to at the moment. ”Sorry, about that. I thought I had turned it off.” She opted to go back to the subject at hand. ”Oh, yeah we were discussing Carrie. I think the movie didn’t really do it justice but then again I’ve never really seen a good adaptation of King’s novel’s made into films.” Completely ignoring the fact that she probably shouldn’t have ignored that phone call.

As Angie spoke on the phone, Adelaide looked out the window at the outside seating. Apparently the day had gone from sweet and sunny, to overcast in a matter of minutes. The redhead rested her head on her hand and glanced back at Angie, who had just spoke about Carrie, the film.
"What about The Shawshank Redemption? I think that was a masterpiece." Adelaide traced little circles on the table with her finger, absent-mindedly. "And then there was Cujo. I don't know about you, cher', but that scared the bejesus out of me. I mean, a rabid St. Bernard? It ruined Beethoven for me. There goes my whole childhood in a flash."
Adelaide realised she was being a pain again and smiled. "Sorry. I agree with you on Dark Tower, though. Not really my scene."

Angie at first wasn’t sure if the other girl had heard her as she seemed to be a bit distracted. The blonde’s mind was a little worried about what awaited her when she returned the call she had just ignored but she would deal with it later. Certainly, that phone call wasn’t one she could take now anyway. Not without having to leave this place for some place less populated.
”Okay, I admit. I never saw that movie. Read the book, which was wonderful but haven’t gotten a chance to see the movie.” Okay, she loved King and had heard that the movie was wonderful by many but had never gotten a chance to watch it. ”Actually, I didn’t find the movie Cujo that scary. And that is one of the few books of his I haven’t gotten around to reading.”
Angie never found it necessary that everyone agree with her all the time, actually, she thought that would be rather boring. So when Adelaide said sorry she simply shrugged unsure exactly of what the girl was apologizing for. Emilius was still gone and now seemed as good of a time as any. ”I was wondering if I could ask you a favor.” It wasn’t a huge favor but she did need someone’s help.

Adelaide's ears perked up when Angie asked for a favour.
"Oh?" She said. Angie was still a mystery to the redhead, so maybe listening to her proposition would shed some light on the girl. Adelaide wondered who she was, and what she was about, as she was with most people, though some were more confusing than others. Angie seemed like she wasn't too big of a mystery, but a mystery none the less.
Adelaide grinned and leaned further onto the table, looking sideways at the blonde girl. "Well, go on then, darlin'. Tell me what you need, and I'll cater."

Angie felt a little relieved when Adelaide pretty much said yes before being asked. ”Well, my physical therapist said I should probably take up swimming and the head of the athletic department said I can get the pool to myself, practically, on Monday nights.” There weren’t any practices then and minus the occasional person who might be around swimming laps or something she should be all right for swimming. ”Problem is I can’t go swimming by myself I still have problems with my muscles so there could be issues if I tried. Anyway, I was wondering if you would mind coming with me.”
The why for wanting to be alone was the same as why she never went to the pool on the weekends. The scars made her far to self-conscious for such things. But Adelaide had seen the ones on her arms and being roommates it was hard to miss the ones on her legs, but Angie couldn’t be sure if the other girl had really noticed those. The ones on her back would be new but weren’t any worse than the other ones.
